Authors Note: This is a personal narrative on the time I got my boater's license
It was a cool night on the water. Me and my family were having a Sunday boat ride with our friends the Marks. All of us were eating pizza from a pizzeria on the lake. We were talking about going up north to our cabin, located on Lake Wisconsin. The parents asked if any of us got our boaters license over the summer, which none of us kids had. If we were to have our boaters license, we would be able to drive the jet skis without a parent. Since I didn’t have my boaters license, that night I studied to earn it.
The next day I sat in my living room, working on the computer to earn my license online. The studying wasn’t easy, actually quit hard. I had already been working for two hours straight, but I was only a quarter way through.
At around noon that day, my sister had a friend come over. They were going to go swimming down the street at our neighborhood pool. I decided to take a break and go with, because I had already been working for three hours.
We arrived at the pool quickly, because we took our go-karts. Nobody was there, so I jumped in the pool right away. It felt so good to be swimming in a pool of cool water, instead of sweating in the heat above. I swam for a few minutes, until I realized something didn’t feel right. If I was at the pool to long, I would forget what I previously learned, they maybe I would fail the final test! I had to go home and work. I got out of the pool and dried off. When there was only a few drops of water left on me, I dashed home on my go-kart.
I got to work right away. Time seemed to went by ever so leisurely. The test was starting to bore me, and also make me a little hungry. Since you should never work on an empty stomach, I cooked up a batch of delicious macaroni and cheese. As soon as I finished my meal, I went back to work. Bored I was, trying to focus on the computer. It was making my eyes hurt, my brain upset, and my feet fall asleep.
Couldn’t I just illegally get a license by just making a fake one? That would be an easier option, but a naughty one also. I could also just cheat, with the help of my little friend Google. I need to focus.
After a few hours more of the mind-numbing studying, I had reached the Final Test. The course gave me the option of taking the test right away, or taking a practice test. I’m not taking a practice test, stupid computer. And so I took the test right away, skipping the pointless practice test. The questions were easy at first. I knew all of the answers. Focusing really hard, I had almost reached the end of the sixty question test in under thirty minutes. It was when I hit question fifty, the test started getting tough. Finally I got through the last set of questions and I finished the test. I needed to get an eighty percent or higher in order to get my license.
I checked to see what my score was, I got a ninety-two! Boaters license, here I come!
My mom called the Wisconsin DNR to get my DNR number for my license. I printed out a temporary license and payed for a plastic one that would come in the mail a couple of weeks later. Soon I would be driving a boat, but more excitingly a jet ski!
About two weeks later we headed up north to the Mark’s cabin with the Marks. Everyone found out that I had gotten my boaters license. Mr. Marks let me take one of the jet skis out for a spin. I had to start the engine. My heart was pounding with joy, and I pulled the throttle. Riding the waves was like riding a dirt bike, only if I fell on the jet ski I would be fine. The waves would spit out water at my face. It was a blast.
The next time I would come back to the cabin, I would ride the jet ski for a longer period of time and learn the cool tricks that I could do. Maybe I would even be able to drive the boat! I was so glad to receive my boaters license.
